Law firm Eversheds LLP will host the seminar series which will look at the options for local authorities to establish and participate in companies and separate delivery vehicles for specific projects.
Many local authorities have established companies or long term strategic partnerships as well as short term or single purpose vehicles to deliver projects and schemes outside of their normal remit. The Government is encouraging this approach, especially for the delivery of functions such as housing, asset management and economic regeneration. This seminar will look at the implications of being involved in companies and other vehicles, whether for these purposes, commercial trading, wellbeing objectives or other purposes. Practical and legal issues will be discussed, based on case studies.
The interactive LA Law workshop will be held at Eversheds’ offices on dates in October through to December. Subjects to be discussed include:
-
Policy Context
-
Key issues for involvement
-
An overview of the Companies Act 2006 and directors duties
-
Tricky issues, including procurement and State Aid
-
Options for structures, including LPs, LLPs and charities
Stephen Cirell, head of local government at Eversheds commented: “Successful involvement by local authorities in companies and other vehicles can present major challenges. Local authorities are increasingly looking at the use of their assets with a view to sharing in any development profit, rather than being perceived to be just ‘selling the family silver’. So asset backed vehicles including LLPs and local housing companies are two new areas for local government. Innovative options for energy service companies are also emerging. The seminar has been designed to share knowledge and ideas and to provide advice and guidance based on experience to inform future actions.”
The cost per delegate is £75 plus VAT, although organisations booking two places will be given a third free of charge. For more information, or to book a place, contact Renu Chandnani on 0845 498 4118 or renuchandnani@eversheds.com.
